  1.                                DATA CONVERSION

  3. 3.x to 4.x

  5.         If you are upgrading from PARENTS 3.0 to 4.0, the software will 
  6. detect that the data files need to be converted.  The data conversion 
  7. between the 3.0 format and the 4.0 format is only minor and will not cause 
  8. any data loss or the need to make any manual modifications.

  11. 2.x TO 4.x
  12.  
  13.     In order to implement some of the new features of PARENTS, the 
  14. database format had to be changed.  Some of the changes that made the data 
  15. conversion necessary were the additions of the SURNAME field to the 
  16. Individual Worksheet and the ability to store date and place data for 
  17. multiple marriages.  As a result of these changes, the 2.x or earlier data 
  18. files are not directly compatible with PARENTS 4.0.
  19.     The first time that you start PARENTS 4.0, the software will detect 
  20. that the datafiles are from an earlier version and present you with the 
  21. option to convert the data files or exit the software.  Before making the 
  22. conversion, you should make a backup copy of all of the .DB and .IDX files.  
  23. The conversion process will also make a backup copy of the original 2.x 
  24. files under another name.
  25.     Once the conversion has been completed, it is up to you to make some 
  26. slight modifications to the data that the data conversion process was unable 
  27. to make.  These modifications include splitting the name field into Surname 
  28. and Name.  Since PARENTS cannot accurately split the name into Surname and 
  29. Name, it is up to the you to make this change.
